Dr. Voge consults Wichita patients every year who are interested in learning more about a tummy tuck procedure. Many of those patients come in with misguided thoughts about what a tummy tuck actually entails. Whether they’ve been given misinformation from a friend, or they read a blog that has mislead them in some way, Dr. Voge often has to correct these myths for many of her prospective patients. Being well-informed is the first step in deciding to have a tummy tuck and we’re here to debunk some of the most common myths surrounding the procedure.
1. If I exercise enough, I can fix my postpartum tummy.
Dr. Voge cares about your overall health, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercise is important. However, while exercise can help you lose weight and excess fat, it cannot repair separated abdominal muscles that occurred during pregnancy or the excess skin left over from drastic weight loss, which is caused by a loss of skin elasticity, not extra fat. During a tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Voge is able to remove excess skin or tissue and stitch up separated abdominal muscles when needed.
2. Tummy tucks are only for women, not men.
Women are not the only ones who can have a tummy tuck. While it’s true that Dr. Voge performs most of her tummy tucks on women, she sees several men each year for this procedure as well. If you’re a man in the Wichita area who has recently lost a significant amount of weight, and you’re unhappy with the excess skin you see in the mirror robbing you from a visibly toned physique, Dr. Voge of Plastic Surgical Specialists can solve this problem through a tummy tuck procedure.
3. A tummy tuck will help me lose weight.
Many of Dr. Voge’s Wichita patients become interested in a tummy tuck procedure because they believe they can fix two problems at once – gain a slimmer midsection and lose substantial weight. While there are many weight loss procedures designed to make your tummy look smaller by removing excess fat, a tummy tuck is not one of them. The goal of a tummy tuck is to improve the appearance and contour of your abdomen, not remove excess fat. This is why Dr. Voge requires you be at or near your ideal weight before having a tummy tuck.
4. I need to finish having children before having a tummy tuck.
Though Dr. Voge of Plastic Surgical Specialists does recommend you wait to have a tummy tuck procedure until after you’ve finished having children, this doesn’t mean that you can’t have the procedure beforehand. Her recommendation comes from her desire for you to have long-lasting results, and future pregnancies could negate those results. However, if you are a young female who has recently lost a significant amount of weight and you are carrying extra skin around your midsection, a tummy tuck may be what you need to get the body you’ve longed for and deserve. While you may need to repeat the procedure years down the road when you’ve finished having children, that is not a guarantee. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy this stage of your life while you’re in it!
